NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ONLINE

The Upper Avenue Community Association, in partnership with the South Armour Heights Residents’ Association, manages the Bedford Park-Nortown Neighbourhood Watch Online program (NWO). The two resident association areas form approximately ninety percent of the City of Toronto neighbourhood, Bedford Park-Nortown.

NWO is a simple concept – it is neighbours knowing their neighbours and communicating electronically regarding issues related to crime and safety. It is based on the premise that, as neighbours, we look after each other. We know better than outsiders, including the police, when something doesn’t look quite right in our neighbourhood. The overall objective is to ensure a safe community, focusing on crime prevention.

There are many benefits to the Neighbourhood Watch program. Some of these are:

  • Knowing your neighbours. NWO promotes getting to know your neighbours and their living patterns. You get to know their vehicles, their children, their normal comings and goings. All of this information is beneficial in knowing when something seems out of place. It allows neighbours to question things that don’t seem right and also promotes community building.

  • Encouraging the “buddy” system when vacationing or away. If mail and packages are picked up, a home does not look empty.

  • Obtaining information that impacts your neighbourhood. Crime statistics are generated on a local basis.

  • People thinking differently about safety and their neighbours.

The NWO Co-Chairs are members of the Community Police Liaison Committee at 32 Division. This provides a direct link to our local police division.

The NWO Program currently has approximately eleven Group Captains covering specific streets in our community. The Group Captains co-ordinate and communicate crime information for their defined street. On a monthly basis, crime information relating specifically to break and enter and auto theft, is relayed from the Co-Chairs of the program to Group Captains to share with their members.
